Overview

The Estimator – Paving is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for asphalt and concrete paving projects. This role involves reviewing project plans and specifications, performing detailed quantity takeoffs, coordinating with subcontractors and suppliers, and collaborating with operations and sales teams to develop winning proposals. 

The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of paving materials, construction methods, and project costing, with strong analytical and communication skills to support both project execution and business growth.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review paving project plans, specifications, and contract documents to determine scope of work.
  • Perform accurate quantity takeoffs and cost analysis for asphalt, concrete, base materials, and related construction activities.
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from subcontractors and suppliers for paving, grading, and related work.
  • Prepare complete and competitive bid proposals and budgets for paving projects, ensuring accuracy and alignment with company standards.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and bid reviews to understand project requirements and constraints.
  • Analyze project constructability, schedule, and risks, recommending cost-saving or value-engineering solutions when appropriate.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of paving materials, labor costs, equipment rates, and market trends.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Project Management, and Operations teams to align proposals with client expectations and project feasibility.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and vendors to support repeat business.
  • Attend trade shows, pre-bid conferences, and industry events to strengthen market presence and generate leads.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum of 5–7 years estimating experience in asphalt and concrete paving projects.
  • Proven ability to prepare detailed cost estimates for projects ranging from $250K to $10M+.
  • Strong understanding of paving construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid, B2W, or equivalent) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical drawings.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present proposals clearly to clients.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict bid deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must comply with company drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, attention to detail, collaboration, and a solution-oriented attitude.
